Hudson River
www.CountryElegancePhotos.com .. Featuring Photographs of the Hudson Valley By Linda T. Hubbard

Bannerman's Island Collection - Bannerman's Island is in the Hudson river south of the Newburgh-Beacon bridge and north of Cold Spring.  It was built as an arsenal for World War I and II.  In the late 60's a fire gutted the structures.  The Bannerman's Trust is trying to raise money for restoration.  The architecture is very detailed and fascinating.  In its glory the castle was magnificent along with a residence and gardens.  Now it continues to intrigue us and hopefully will be restored.

Bannerman Castle - More of Tower Collapses January 25, 2010

The wind and rain of January 24 and 25 have taken another toll on Bannerman's castle.

Bannerman's Island - Feb 2010

The white line shows the parts of the walls that are now gone...only the west wall and a part of the south wall is now standing...

Over the years, I have photographed Bannerman's Castle in many seasons, from the river, the air and on land. It's mystique has captured the attention and admiration of many. Unfortunately sometime during the night of December 26th, a major portion of the castle came down - and now on January 25, a month later, another major portion of the castle has collapsed. The unprecedented damage, caused by aging mortar and unprotected brick damaged by the elements, underscores the need for immediate action to save this endangered historic and scenic treasure in the Hudson River.

Bannerman's from Above - flying over Bannerman's Island in a helicopter is fascinating.....it is a small island nestled in the mountains that surround the Hudson River.

I've flown over the island in the hot hazy summer and the cool clear autumn - here are some of those images....always like doing a dance - circling and coming in closer.....and circling again....always intriguing...

many of these photos were taken at low tide - so you can see the old docks and pilings....the builder truly had a master plan..

Bannerman's from the River - from a boat, one can really start to see the detail on the castle...and at the end of the day, the castle has a golden glow.
